Autism Month: How MedicAlert Supports Neurodivergent Individuals

10 April 2025 MedicAlert

April marks Autism Month, a time to celebrate neurodiversity, raise awareness and develop the acceptance of autism and the experiences autistic individuals face across the UK and beyond.

Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts with others and experiences the world. No two autistic people are the same and the spectrum is broad and varied. At MedicAlert, we’re proud to support those who live with autism by providing a trusted, practical way to communicate health needs, especially when communication may be difficult or impossible.

Autism and Comorbidities: A Closer Look

It’s important to recognise that many autistic individuals also experience comorbidities. This is additional physical or mental health conditions that co-occur with autism. These can influence how autism presents itself and how individuals interact with the world around them.

Some of the most common comorbidities associated with autism include:

1. ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)

ADHD and autism often overlap. Individuals may experience difficulty with focus, impulse control and hyperactivity, which can present unique challenges in school, work or other social environments.

2. Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety is one of the most commonly reported comorbidities. Social anxiety, generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) and phobias can affect daily life and routines. For some, anxiety is heightened by sensory sensitivities or changes to familiar environments.

3. Epilepsy

Studies suggest a higher prevalence of epilepsy among autistic individuals compared to the general population. Seizure management can be a significant part of some people's healthcare needs.

4. Ethers-Danlos Syndrome and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD) are connective tissue disorders often seen alongside autism. They involve joint hypermobility, pain and fatigue, with EDS typically being more complex. Many autistic individuals experience symptoms of HSD, suggesting a possible link and the need for holistic, tailored care.

5. Gastrointestinal Issues

Some people report chronic GI symptoms such as abdominal pain, constipation or food intolerances. These may add another layer to healthcare and daily wellbeing.

Why This Matters

Autism is not an illness to be “cured” but a difference to be understood and respected. However, managing the associated health conditions and ensuring safety, particularly in emergency situations, can present real challenges.

That’s where MedicAlert can make a difference.

How MedicAlert Supports Autistic Individuals

At MedicAlert, we provide services designed to support people living with autism and its associated conditions. Here’s how we can help:

  • Emergency Communication: In the event of a crisis or sensory overload, an autistic person may be unable to speak or communicate effectively. A MedicAlert ID can speak for them, providing essential information to emergency services, carers or members of the public.
  • Detailed Medical Records: Our 24/7 emergency helpline is linked to a secure, nurse-checked medical record. This can include information about autism, co-occurring conditions (such as epilepsy or anxiety), medications and even communication preferences or sensory sensitivities.
  • Reassurance for Families and Carers: Knowing that vital details are accessible at any time offers peace of mind to parents, carers and loved ones. It can also help autistic individuals feel safer when out in public, at school or travelling independently.
  • Inclusivity and Respect: At MedicAlert, we champion inclusivity. Our IDs are customisable, wearable in a variety of ways and suitable for all ages, from young children to adults.

A Note on Language and Identity

We understand that language around autism is deeply personal. Some prefer “person with autism,” while others identify as “autistic.” MedicAlert respects the diverse ways individuals describe their identities and supports all members in expressing themselves authentically.

Autism Month

This Autism Month, we celebrate the strength, creativity and diversity of the autistic community. We are also proud to have members of our team on the spectrum and understand the complexity of living with co-occurring conditions and the need for inclusive, accessible support.

Whether you’re navigating everyday life or preparing for the unexpected, MedicAlert is here to help you live more confidently, with your safety and dignity at the forefront.
