How rare is Diamond Blackfan Anaemia (DBA)?

Diamond-Blackfan Anemia (DBA) is a rare genetic disorder in the UK that leads to a failure of the bone marrow to produce red blood cells. DBA's exact prevalence in the UK is not well-documented. However, it is estimated to occur in approximately 5 to 7 individuals per million live births worldwide.

It primarily affects infants and children, causing severe anemia, fatigue, pale skin, and increased vulnerability to infections. Treatment involves regular blood transfusions, corticosteroid therapy, or, in severe cases, a bone marrow transplant. DBA is caused by genetic mutations affecting ribosome production.
